So perhaps we can help out the esteemed folks at the Oxford English Dictionary as they hunt for the first use of the spy world expression: “come in from the cold.” Did it originate with John le Carré and his 1963 novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold? Or do its roots go deeper than that?
