Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: Where is my Pantheon of the Untrustworthy?

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is based upon the John LeCarre novel about British spy George Smiley. At HQ, a few of us have been tapping our toes and drumming our fingers awaiting T2S2.  And today is supposedly the day of its release, and out here on the eastern seaboard of the U.S., at least, I can’t seem to find any Smiley showtimes—Arrrrgh!

I am awash in despair.  My Friday night is ruined, though I will try to soldier on bear up. If you get to see this cinematic spectacular tonight or this weekend, please do tell me how great it is, but gently, and preferably while wearing a rumpled raincoat.

Note that the Studio Canal poster doesn’t even show Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, or Benedict Cumberbatch who are also in this glorious pantheon of the untrustworthy. It also says November.  Does everyone get to see it before I do?!

I can tell you Benedict Cumberbatch is good in it but his hair is ridiculous. It’s a blond bowl cut that wouldn’t even work on five-year-old school boys. I love him, though. He also has a small part in War Horse, which made me cry.

Very limited on the 9th (four cities) with a few more cities being added next weekend (Boston and DC) and then a wider release in January.

Horribly planned and executed release schedule.

@PCN- looked funny in the trailer. Will screen it out of my notice like an awful toupee.

@Jeremiah Genest: Finally heard it’s in one place in NYC that’s a hike for me this weekend. Maybe during the workweek? Yes, I’d like more cities, but also more theatres in the cities where it’s supposed to be released! Thanks for the update! Hope the film rises above its release stumbles.

I was looking forward to this too and it’s not available in my area. I don’t remember ever hearing it would be a limited release and that sucks. I think they will have hurt themselves doing it this way.

This kind of release schedule is common for this type of movie (low budget, no superheroes). It has to open in at least one week in one theater by the end of the year so it can qualify for awards. The limited release also helps build word of mouth, which the studio expects to be good. By the time it opens wide, fans who have been anticipating it will hopefully flock to theaters and it’ll have a good opening weekend.

@Jerimiah Genest- thanks for the theater list. I guess I will have to wait a week or two…

The movie opens here in Phoenix on Dec 23, and it also looks like I will be able to attend a sneak preview of it on Dec 19, since another pair of reviewers is heading for the sneak of Girl with the Dragon Tatto, which happens at the exact same time on the other side of town.

This may be the one time I’m actually glad it’s been over 20 years since I’ve seen the original miniseries 🙂
