Not to be outdone by the titans of industry that Marvel Studios has become, DC Comics is set to release two blockbuster films this year, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
While I'll reserve judgment for the Bahstan Ben Affleck Batman for when it actually comes out, the star-studded antihero/supervillain movie, Suicide Squad, looks like a homerun straight off the baseball bat of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
Even if Jared Leto's Joker pales in comparison to the more recent Heath Ledger (or Jack Nicholson for that matter), we've got a whole squad of supervillains (and superstar actors) ready to take center stage.
The trailer begins by showing off “the most dangerous people on the planet,” one by one. For the viewer, that means we get a good peek at who’s in the squad—Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Slipknot (Adam Beach). Add Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and you've got quite the cast.
We also get our first glimpse of Deadshot’s helmet, albeit for about 0.5 seconds.
In addition to those listed above, we see Katana (Karen Fukuhara) and her Soultaker sword, Julie Moon/Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), and the Joker (Jared Leto) and his goons.
The trailer seems to suggest that Enchantress is not part of the Suicide Squad, but may actually be the main villain in the film—as Julie Moon often cannot control her powers in the comics. There’s a black sludge/goo that seems to be taking center stage as the monster this rag-tag team is assembled to fight.
It also features a good preview of the obvious dark humor that will infect the film—not only with Harley Quinn quips, but also with the trailer’s use of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” to comedic effect throughout.
With its scheduled release date of August 5, 2016, the cold weather isn’t the only reason I wish summer would hurry up and get here…
