A Taste of the Caribbean: Inspiration for Against the Currant
My family immigrated to the United States from Grenada, West Indies, when I was very young. I have a vivid memory of walking with my father in my childhood neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, in the late 1970s. Calypso music was blaring in the streets. Loud voices with heavy West Indian accents talked over the songs and each other. I remember the smell of fresh produce and frying fish. My father turned to me and smiled. “This is like Little Grenada.”
Forty years later, Brooklyn officially designated that neighborhood Little Caribbean in honor of its West Indian diaspora. The area spans parts of Flatbush, East Flatbush, and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. I always thought my dad was ahead of his time.
The setting for my new Spice Isle Bakery Mystery series is a fictionalized version of Little Caribbean. The stories combine great food, music, myths and murder. Step into the world of the Spice Isle Bakery for a taste of the Caribbean.
