Q&A with Alice Feeney, author of Daisy Darker
By Crime HQAugust 29, 2022
CE: We’re thrilled to have you visit the site! First, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Alice: I’m a writer and journalist and I live in Devon with my family. I spent 15 years working for the BBC before becoming an author. My debut novel Sometimes I Lie was an international bestseller and has been translated into over 20 languages. My last novel Rock Paper Scissors is being made into a TV series for Netflix by the producer of The Crown.
CE: Can you tell us about your new novel, Daisy Darker?
Alice: Daisy Darker is a dark and twisty tale set on a tiny tidal island just off the Cornish coast. The Darker family haven’t all been in the same place at the same time for years, but they have come together at Seaglass—Nana’s crumbling Cornish home—to celebrate her 80th birthday. When the tide comes in, they’ll be cut off from the rest of the world for eight hours. When the tide goes back out things will never be the same again, because one of them is a killer.
CE: What’s your writing process like?
Alice: It’s been different for each book, but I have always been a planner. I tend to think about the story and my characters for a very long time before I write a word. Daisy took five years to complete, it was the most difficult book to write but also the one I am most proud of.
CE: Did you draw inspiration from any books, series, or films? And, what are you watching/reading now?
Alice: I often think of Daisy Darker as my Agatha Christie novel. And Then There Were None is one of my favourite books, and Daisy is my own little tribute to one of my favourite authors. I’m currently watching The Sandman on Netflix.
CE: Do you have any actresses in mind who you would cast to play Daisy (or other characters) if the book were adapted to film/TV?
Alice: Daisy Ridley sparked the idea for Daisy Darker…it’s hard to explain, but that is what happened!
CE: Congratulations on getting selected for Book of the Month! What’s that been like?
Alice: I love Book of the Month. And I love that they send me my own blue box with my book inside. I get so excited opening it, like a kid at Christmas! Seeing so many beautiful pictures and reading kind reviews on Instagram makes me so happy, and I’m so grateful to the readers who have supported me and my books by being so kind.
CE: What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve received?
Alice: Read, write (ideally a book that you would want to read) and never give up.
CE: It’s so great to see the amazing buzz and blurbs for Daisy Darker already. What’s next for you? Any exciting projects on the horizon?
Alice: The reaction to Daisy has been incredible and I feel very lucky to have the best job in the world. I’ll be sending my next book (out in 2023) to my agents and editors after my tour for Daisy Darker in the US. I’m also very excited for the TV adaptation of Rock Paper Scissors, we’ll hopefully be filming that in Scotland next year.
CE: What would be your personal murder weapon of choice?
Alice: I can’t answer that, my answer might be used as evidence one day! I will say that I’ve killed enough people in books to know a lot of different ways to do it!
CE: Well played, Alice, well played—and we don’t dare doubt your ability! Thanks so much for your time, and we wish you huge success with Daisy Darker!
About Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney:
Daisy Darker was born with a broken heart. Now after years of avoiding each other, Daisy Darker’s entire family is assembling for Nana’s 80th birthday party in her crumbling gothic house on a tiny tidal island. The family arrives, each of them harboring secrets. When the tide comes in, they will be cut off from the rest of the world for eight hours.
But at the stroke of midnight, as a storm rages, Nana is found dead. And an hour later, the next family member follows…
Trapped on an island where someone is killing them one by one, the Darkers must reckon with their present mystery as well as their past secrets, before the tide goes out and all is revealed.
