Custer, Texas Preacher: Preacher Headed to Television

Preacher

Breaking Bad has ended. Walter White has sung his glorious swan song of destruction and self-immolation. The Walking Dead shambles on, spawning even more zombie series and Don Draper is nearing his own end in Mad Men, so what is next for the network that has brought us all of these wonderful shows? Preacher.

Preacher, a comic created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, is the story of a Texas preacher who is possessed by the offspring of a demon and an angel. Because of this, Jesse Custer, the preacher, has the supernatural power of being able to compel anyone to do anything he asks. Custer, along with his ex girlfriend, Tulip O'Hare, and a vampire named Cassidy set out across America to track down God.

What I have read of the series is a bit like Jerry Springer meets Supernatural with a healthy dose of Westerns thrown in (John Wayne is, literally, Custer's spirit guide). As both a rural noir and comic fan, I'm very excited to see it getting more attention from AMC, and rumor also has it that Seth Rogen may be involved. Have you ever read Preacher?

This property was initially considered by HBO. AMC would be the ideal home for it. I would love to see author Ken Bruen in the role of Cassidy. He would be perfect.

That’s an interesting casting Joe, he certainly has the look and heratige now that you mention it….

I love Preacher, but AMC is not the right place for it. It would need to be done on a network that would allow something that would be a hard R if done as a movie. But at the end of the day, any adaptation would fail because noone would be willling to put on a show that goes after Christianity as hard as Preacher did without gutting it.
