Book Series Binge: Q&A with Jane K. Cleland on Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries

Author of the Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries, Jane K. Cleland answers a few questions about Josie and Rocky Point, a quaint town on the rugged coast of New Hampshire where the series is set.

Would you like to live in the setting you created for the Josie Prescott Antiques Mystery series?

Oh, yes. Rocky Point is a special place, a quaint town on the rugged coast of New Hampshire. It’s a sweet and decent community, the kind of place where local bands play familiar tunes on warm summer nights. Years ago, mystery publisher, bookseller, and reviewer, Jim Huang, wrote that I’d created the kind of workplace where everyone wanted a job. I love that! And I think it’s true. I’d like to work at Prescott’s Antiques & Auctions, too.

How has Josie changed since you began the series?

Josie has changed in many ways, from overcoming the grief and disappointment that spurred her to move to New Hampshire in the first place to finding love a decade later and from hiring Gretchen as her first employee while struggling to get her fledgling business off the ground to promoting Gretchen to general manager fifteen years later. Other characters have changed too, developing, suffering setbacks, overcoming obstacles. There’s an ensemble cast, and it’s gratifying, I think, to see how they’re doing with each new story.

Describe Josie in one sentence.

Josie Prescott is honorable to her toes, devoted to her husband, a savvy businesswoman, and a loyal friend.
