Book Review: Her Deadly Game by Robert Dugoni
By Jeff Ayers
April 10, 2023Whether it’s crime fiction in the style of Michael Connelly or a legal thriller like John Grisham writes, Robert Dugoni is the grandmaster of them both. His Tracy Crosswhite police series has been breaking sales records, and Dugoni’s latest, Her Deadly Game, launches a new legal series that will surely be another bestseller.
Keera Duggan has a crafty mind and is a chess prodigy. Her dad, Patsy, was once known as a star attorney, but he lost it all thanks to the bottle. After extenuating circumstances force Keera to leave a Seattle prosecutor job, she joins her father’s criminal defense law firm. When a significant case lands in the firm’s lap, Keera realizes she must handle it herself to restore her and her father’s reputations.
Vince LaRussa is a financial manager, and one evening after giving a speech, he arrives home to find his wife killed. His alibi appears solid, but the more the police investigate the murder, the guiltier LaRussa appears. To add to the mystery, someone with intimate knowledge of LaRussa and his past leaves cryptic names and clues in untraceable emails.
With an enemy always seeming two steps ahead, Keera utilizes strategy and cunning to ensure every move on one side is met with the perfect response on the other. Indeed, a deadly game.
Dugoni mixes chess and the courtroom to create another stellar thriller. Readers with no understanding of chess will not feel lost, and the mystery blends the classic Paul Newman film, The Verdict, with Perry Mason in refreshing ways. Justice has rarely been this compelling.
