James Renner, author of the upcoming True Crime Addict: How I Lost Myself in the Mysterious Disappearance of Maura Murray, has been investigating Maura Murray’s disappearance since 2011. Renner set up the blog My Search for Maura Murray to share his thoughts and findings with the public, in hopes that others like him would take interest in the case or someone connected to Maura might reach out to provide valuable information on what actually happened.
We promised to continue to check in as we neared the publication of the much anticipated account of his investigation. Last time, we introduced the cast of characters involved with the case—everyone from Maura’s father to friends at UMass to her assistant track coach.

With the book set to publish on May 24th, Renner has set up a “Beginner’s Guide” to the case over on his blog. With over 400 separate blog posts, this guide serves as a way to get new readers caught up to speed on the details of the case, including:
- At the time of her disappearance, Maura was on probation for credit card fraud, having been caught stealing credit card numbers to order pizza in the dorms at UMass.
- There is no significance to the strange phone call Billy Rausch got on his cell phone. Police tracked down and interviewed the person who made that call. It was a Red Cross worker trying to reach him.
