Normally criminals will do everything they can to avoid a police station, right? However, investigators say a man tried to break into the Shelburne Police Department.
Local police say John Dettor, 59, was just looking for a place to keep warm and spend the night. Dettor was under the impression he was breaking into a school, but to his surprise it was actually the local police station.
One police officer and the dispatcher were inside the building when they heard glass breaking and a loud smash. Then things got worse for Dettor when the internal alarm went off. As the officer checked the perimeter of the building with a flashlight, he found Dettor hiding in the bushes. Police say Dettor stepped out and admitted he had broken the window and thought he was breaking into a school.
He was arrested for unlawful mischief.
