Hay You! Stop, Thief!

Let’s bale, dude!
“Hay is for horses,” I was alwas taught. Apparently, in northern Colorado, hay is for thieves, too.  According to the Denver Post:

A brazen thief hot-wired a front-end loader to steal hay valued at $5,000 from fields on a farm north of Wellington.

It was the latest in a series of northern Colorado hay and alfalfa thefts reported in the wake of prices pushed high by prolonged drought and extreme heat throughout the country.

“This is the third or fourth one in the last five or six weeks,” Larimer County sheriff's spokesman John Schulz said. “It was one of the larger ones.”

The thief—or more likely team of thieves—took 10 round bales, which can stand more than 6 feet high, five 4-by-4-foot square alfalfa bales and eight 3-foot by 4-foot alfalfa bales. Another $800 of hay was damaged. The ignition switch of the front-end loader was damaged when the machine was hot-wired, the sheriff’s department said.

So, make hay while the sun shines. And people, please, dont take hay even while it’s not shining.

    With the severe drought, I can promise you that stealing hay for horses and cows will be BIG business this winter…. so sad.

    @sk-

    I had a friend who worked on a horse farm for many years and there was NOTHING he hated more than haying season. Given that I’ve seen what he went through, I can’t imagine anyone stealing the hay.

    I suppose this should be termed a tale of crops and robbers.
