Alan Furst’s The Spies of Warsaw Coming to TV … Starring David Tennant

David Tennant and Alan Furst’s The Spies of WarsawThere’s been a bit of hubbub this week about Doctor Who. (When doesn’t the Doctor create hubbub?)

CriminalElement.com has already revealed that the current (Eleventh) Doctor, Matt Smith, is filming new episodes in New York City. Now we can report that immediate past (Tenth) Doctor, David Tennant, just started—or is about to start—filming a new spy thriller in Poland. (Officially filming begins in May, but rumblings on “The Twitter” indicate that it started last week.)

The Spies of Warsaw, based on the 2008 novel by Alan Furst, stars Tennant as Colonel Jean-François Mercier, a military attaché assigned to the French embassy in Warsaw at the start of World War II. Hitler is on the move and Mercier, a World War I hero and contemporary/friend of Charles de Gaulle, is keeping close track of what the Germans will do next. Where can this lead him but “into a world of abduction, betrayal and intrigue in the diplomatic salons and back alleys of Warsaw” (to quote the press brief)?

The story, which spans the years from 1933 to 1943, is set in Paris, Warsaw, London, and Berlin. Janet Montgomery co-stars as Anna Szarbek, Mercier’s love interest , a French lawyer of Polish heritage employed by the League of Nations.

It will be broadcast in two 90-minute episodes as part of BBC America’s Dramaville franchise. An air date has not been confirmed. Series writers are Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement.

Meanwhile, fans of Alan Furst have even more good news to celebrate: his next World War II-era thriller, A Mission to Paris, will be published in June.
