Alcatraz: Another Lost Island?

Jorge Garcia, Sarah Jones, and Sam Neill in Alcatraz
Now that December is here and regular season programming is being pre-empted right and left for various holiday specials, I’m looking forward to some of the new and returning shows coming up in January. One of those is J.J. Abrams’ new series, Alcatraz. If you like your crime with a side of weird, this may be right up your alley. The show is based on the idea that when Alcatraz closed in 1963, the prisoners weren’t transfered to other prisons; they simply disappeared. Along with the guards. And now, almost fifty years later, they’re returning.

All I have to do is see Sam Neill on screen to know I’m willing to at least give it a shot. I must admit, I wasn’t a big fan of Lost, so the constant comparisons to that show (look, it’s J.J. Abrams! And an island! And Jorge Garcia, who played Hurley on Lost!) don’t appeal to me so much. Although I like an overall arc to a series, I prefer my shows more episodic, with actual crimes being solved at the end of each episode. But this one looks intriguing, as if there’s a deep mystery about the disappearance, but also weekly criminals running loose that need to be captured.

So what do you think?  Are you going to check it out? Were you a Lost fan?

I was a fan of “Lost” in the beginning, b ut grew tired of it and didn’t watch thr last two seasons. I am looking forward to this show (I love Sam too!) and hope it will be interesting enough to keep watching.

I will check this out. I never got into Lost, but I loved Alias. I agree with @becky – This concept sounds intriguing. Do you guys know when it starts? Need to set that DVR.
