Secret Weapon: Military Working Dogs

Helicopter Lowers Navy SEAL and Military Working Dog/ credit: K-9 Storm and U.S. Navy

Rebecca Frankel has a remarkable photo essay at Foreign Policy, with links to her other articles as Chief Canine Correspondent.

The question of how the dog got into bin Laden's compound is no puzzle — the same way the special ops team did, by being lowered from an MH-60s helicopter… A U.S. Navy SEAL, Mike Forsythe, and his dog, Cara — pictured above — recently broke the world record for “highest man/dog parachute deployment” by jumping from 30,100 feet.

Go view more amazing pictures.  Also, read more about the persistent superiority of the dog's legendary sniffer to even cutting edge explosive-detection tech, and how vapor-wake dogs can track scents that have simply moved through the local airspace.   There's now a wide range of highly-specialized jobs that military working dogs (MWDs) tackle, and, therefore,  a whole array of modern gear for protecting a troop's best friend.  Yes, they're called “doggles.”

After recon, I'm finding my TBR pile thin of contemporary military thrillers and espionage.  However, for some reason, I'm feeling in the mood to follow orders.  How about suggestions for what and whom I'm missing?  Drop into the comments and give me 20!

I don’t read many military thrillers, but I enjoyed Rogue Warrior, Red Cell and Green Team by SEAL Team Six commander Richard Marcinko. The first is a bio, the other two are fictional thrillers based on the team’s exploits, and good fun reads.

Blue on Blue by Tony Robinson. Robinson was another name used by a well-known crime writer who was too lazy, by his own admission, to create a new character for his bad guy so he just used me. I became the Laird of Lochnacrag, meglomaniac, billionaire, owned his own island, kidnapped the daughter of the prime minister, that kind of thing. I quite liked the billionaire bit.
