Winnetou and the Return of the Western?

Winnetou by Karl May
Good news for western fans this weekend. News is that Dances with Wolves screenwriter Michael Blake has been hired to adapt Winnetou by German western writer Karl May to the big screen…again.

The series had a pretty good run back in the 1960s that included about 12 movies and a television miniseries. All starred french actor Pierre Brice as Winnetou and frequently had American Lex Barker as Old Shatterhand. Whether or not this movie will mark a return of the western, we will all have to wait and see.

The books were originally written in the late 1800s in German by Karl May and are about a German-American cowboy called Old Shatterhand that mets and befriends an Apache named Winnetou.  Like many westerns, Winnetou idealized a simpler life, and due to their popularity managed to avoid the Nazi book purges, despite the book’s sympathetic dipiction of non-Aryan races.

So what do you think, is the Western film making a comeback?
