Dapper Dandies Down Under: Mug Shots from Australia in the 1920s

Teens today don’t dress half this nicely!
Periodically, we post booking photos of the criminals—or alleged criminals—we’re discussing here at Crime HQ. But none of them look nearly so fashionable as the series of more than fifty mug shots (also mugshots) that the LA Times dug up recently from the NSW Police Forensic Archive, Justice & Police Museum, and Historic Houses Trust of NSW.

The two “gents” at right, John Walter Ford and Oswald Clive Nash, were both sixteen years old when this shot was taken in 1921. They were charged with breaking and entering, and “released on bonds ’to be of good behavior’ for one year.”
