Margot Robbie Cast as Tonya Harding in Upcoming Biopic, I, Tonya

Figure Skating was never bigger than in 1994. Unfortunately, it was for all the wrong reasons.

Few of us remember who won the 1994 Winter Olympics ladies figure skating gold, but everyone remembers the media frenzy that followed Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. Both American hopefuls, the two ladies were expected to compete as favorites to win the gold medal that year. However, on January 6, 1994, Nancy Kerrigan was attacked as she stepped off the ice after a practice session in Detroit, MI—struck with a police baton just above her right knee. The blow was intended to break her knee, but luckily for her, missed and hit her thigh, causing only a bruise in the process.

Harding’s then husband and bodyguard hired a man to execute the attack, and when the news caught wind of this, the frenzy began. Seeking a deal, Harding’s husband implicated Tonya in the attack. After pleading guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution, she was forced to withdraw from the ’94 World Figure Skating Championships. The USFA subsequently stripped of her 1994 US Championships title and banned from the USFA for life.

Now, more than 20 years later, Margot Robbie has signed on to portray the fallen figure skater in an upcoming biopic titled I, Tonya. Written by Steve Rogers (Love the Coopers, P.S. I Love You) and produced by Brian Unkeless, this biopic is rumored to focus on the tragedy of Harding’s upbringing as much as the absurdity of what happened in 1994. The film does not have a director yet, but with a lead like Margot Robbie signed on, I’m sure that will be a quick remedy.
