Denzel Washington Joins Cast of The Magnificent Seven Remake

Denzel Washington will work with Training Day director Antoine Fuqua again in a remake of The Magnificent Seven.

While promoting his upcoming film, The Equalizer, Denzel Washington announced that he has signed on for a role in the eventual remake of The Magnificent Seven.

Set to direct is Antoine Fuqua, who has worked with Washington both on the soon-t0-be-released The Equalizer, and in 2003's Training Day, where Washington won an Academy Award for his role.

True Detective's writer Nic Pizzolatto has written the first draft of the remake, and multiple other stars have been associated with the film, including Matt Damon, Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, and Tom Cruise. Washington is the first actor to confirm a role in the film.

What do you think of the upcoming remake? Is it another case of Hollywood greed, or do you think it's time for a reimagining of the story?

I can see a remake of The Magnificent Seven and Denzel would be a welcomed addition. Though the original was made up of lesser known stars who became famous and maybe that would have been a sharper approach.

I love this movie, in the U.S. and Japanese forms, so I’m naturally a little wary of a remake. The talent behind it is obviously great, but I think for this many big stars to work and to immerse their star power in the story, there needs to be a very light touch in the script. But usually, with these BIG NAMES, people want to get their value by using them. I love what Pizzolatto did with TD, but I think more than one speech like Rust’s could sink the 7. I thought Unforgiven had a very restrained quality to the writing and it worked, but I bet those sparse, simple words looked like nothing on the page, because the meaning came through visuals and the acting. What will happen here, I wonder? I just don’t want to see the 7 turned into a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World or a dusty version of Ocean’s whatever-teen. It’s not that kind of groove.

It will also be interesting since Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight should be debuting around the same time as this, maybe a little before. I have to think a Tarantino original story will be to properly pay respect to the classics without ripping them off completely.

    NOOOOOOOOO. Don’t do it.
I stand by my original position. The Magnificent Seven is the greatest western ever made and no on should tamper with it. Imitation is ridiculous. Gentlemen: Come on …55 years is perfect for a modernization of one of the all time best westerns! If Denzel is playing the Yul Brynner role of Chris…let’s see, best cast for the McQueen role of Vin…could be …Matthew McConaughy…maybe Jason Staham in the Bronson role….has to hide the cockney accent, though! If you want an equally exciting potential hit….I have “Forty Caliber Lightning” in the works! Oh yes…critical casting will be the Eli Wallach role as the Bandit leader. Rod Thompson….author of “Going to Brownsville” and” Red Blooded Sons”

There’s no such thing as a remake of this film. Considering its 54-yr-old release, probably 60% of moviegoers have never seen the original.
There were no black guys in the original which cancels the “remake” theory. Washington will be added because he is box-office and because Al Sharpton says so. I suppose Washington wants to play Chris. In the original, these were guys in their 20s and 30s. With the actors listed for this “remake,” we have guys in middle age, and one septugenarian.
This one is a guaranteed flop.
