Surfs Up: Point Break Remake, Crime Against Film in the (Re)Making?

You either loved or hated it, but either way it’s coming back around. On Thursday it was announced that Ericson Core will direct the remake of the 1991 surfer crime film, Point Break. The original starred Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves as FBI agents who go undercover to break up a gang of mask-wearing bank robbers who are also…surfers… We guess when they were saying “Hang 10” they really meant “Give me $10 million.”

Deadline.com reports that Core will change the focus of the film. Instead of surfing, “they’re setting the remake in the world of international extreme sports, and an undercover FBI agent infiltrates a criminal ring.”

Core was the director of photography on The Fast and the Furious and on Daredevil. His directorial debut was the 2006 football film Invincible, starring Mark Wahlberg. Could the Point Break reboot be a big break for Core? Before you write it off, consider this: Kathryn Bigelow who directed the original (which, we admit was a tad far-fetched) won a Best Director Oscar in 2008 for The Hurt Locker and had another big success in 2012 with Zero Dark Thirty.
