Grimm Will Return, with a Wider Focus

Hornsby and Lee looking Grimm.
According to the good folks over at Blastr, our favorite paranormal police procedural, Grimm, has been renewed for a second season and that season will allow some of the secondary characters a bigger share of the spotlight. Says Reggie Lee, who plays Sergeant Wu,

“I thought, ’Thank God!’ Thank God I get to do something besides describe a crime scene,” said Lee. “Each one of us has their own storylines. But to go beyond that and go wild and crazy like that is what we live for. So I welcomed it, and I welcome more things like that. Please.”

Lee is not the only one anxious for some of the focus of the show to shift away from Nick. Fans have been crying out to see more of Nick’s partner, Hank (played by Russell Hornsby), and it appears they’re going to get their wish. Both Lee and Hornsby have expressed wishes to become more involved with the mythological aspect of the show, and that only makes sense: how long can Nick keep his two lives separate, after all?

I think they already have the mix of characters about right. I’d love to see a bit more of Wu and Monroe and the rest, sure. But they are terrific quirky sidekicks, not the leads of the show. They add spice, but too much spice will ruin any dish.

I’ve seen too many shows who promote a beloved secondary character to main and completely mess with the vibe of the series.

I would like to see the fiance become a kick-a$$ partner for Nick. She knows how to shoot and she’s a vet. A bit of training and she could be more than a damsel in distress.

I am so, so, so happy that this show is being renewed. It’s a terrific and fun supernatural thriller. I think Nick is a terrific character, but would much rather see more of Monroe and new Rosalee than the cops. I also love the idea of Juliet being a kick-ass help to Nick. I like Wu and Hank and want them well-developed, but I’d rather see more of the others. IMO.

Still, it’s simply a good show and I’m glad it’s returning.

I like both Hank and Wu, too, and don’t mind them having intra-season arcs, as long as individual episodes don’t get too scattered. I’m fascinated by Wu’s odd eating habits, and happy to see the show pop them in, unremarked, as a lurking mystery. I was afraid, at the show’s beginning, that they were going to make Juliet a simpering miss at home, partially because she has such delicate features–I know, I typecast, too. But I love that she’s brave on a regular basis without being TSTL foolhardy, and I enjoy the way her capacities are developing. I also think that creating the hierarchy of vesen below and above Captain Reynard gives them some room to unfold more complicated stories and multi-episodic villains.

Still, does anyone else wonder, since Nick doesn’t even use the weapons in the trailer, whether he inherited anything like spidey strenth? Strong vesen (sp?) fear him as if he’s assumed to be bad-ass, but he’s usually just punching someone or cuffing creatures holding still for it. This really came home to me in the cage match where he positioned himself in front of Monroe, as if he were physically tougher. People give him a lot of credit. The fact he’s a Grimm alone seems to give him the element of surprise in attacks, but how long does that last? Maybe Grimms have hard-to-break bones or just congenital luck?

@Allison, I like the addition of Rosalee, too!

I haven’t watched this show yet, but as a result of this post and comments, I think I will start loading up the DVR.

I can’t believe I actually watched all these shows. I NEVER watch anything with vampires, etc. in it. For some reason this show has grabbed me. I can’t say I’ll be as faithful next season, but we’ll see.
