CBS Flips Sherlock’s Script: Lucy Liu as Joan Watson?

Lucy LiuWell, this may be a better sign, I think. CBS’s new crime series Elementary really needed to flip the script somehow, so as not to seem derivative of other *ahem* modern Sherlock Holmes updates.  Still hate the name—and you’d think we’d feel more affinity given ours—but I’m intrigued by the thought of Ms. Liu as a Joan Watson. More details per Deadline:

…Jonny Lee Miller as eccentric Brit Sherlock Holmes, a former consultant to Scotland Yard whose addiction problems led him to a rehab center in New York City. Just out of rehab, Holmes now lives in Brooklyn with “sober companion” Joan Watson (Liu), a former surgeon who lost her license after a patient died, while consulting for the NYPD.

He’ll stay British, we know that now. And she’s barely a doctor. (Last time we talked about her, Liu was looking decidedly official.)  But living in Brooklyn? Oh, I guess. Sure. Them, too. What do you think?

I’d give it a try. She is very good in Southland.

Not sure I am ready for this one.

Well “barely a doctor” would give her a goal at least, to get her license back. I think the “Body of Proof” show has a premise where the doctor used to work on live people, until a horrible mistake, and then she became a medical examiner so that she couldn’t accidentally kill anybody.

It’s weird that places like the Hollywood Reporter are saying she’s the first ever female Watson. Watson has been female before, like in the “Return of Sherlock Holmes” movie with Margaret Colin. Even before that, Sherlockian Rex Stout wrote his “Watson was a Woman” theory for a meeting of the Baker Street Irregulars. So it’s not without precedent.

I can’t seem to wrap my head around Joan Watson. Doesn’t seem right but will check it out.
