Yelp! What a Jail!

Getting away to the island for a week.
Hot vacation spot? Hip dining emporium? Readers of the online service Yelp! are accustomed to seeing ratings of both. But a trend outlined in this New York Post article is a bit different. Apparently, NYC denizens have taken to reviewing…jails. Yes, that’s right,  Central Booking (Manhattan), Central Booking (Queens) and Riker’s Island all have their own Yelp pages. Riker’s Island gets 3.5 stars at the moment.

Manhattan, a two-star joint.
Since regardless of where you commit a crime in the five boroughs of New York City you’ll end up at Riker’s, there doesn’t seem to be much point in the Yelp reviews. On the other hand, it’s evident from their respective ratings (Queens: 5 stars, Manhattan: 2 stars) that if you’re going to be arrested, Queens is the place to be. Of course, there is only one Queens review, compared to the twelve Manhattan reviews, so it’s possible that once more people start reviewing their experiences there, the rating will drop a bit.

I wonder if Central Booking and the jails tie management compensation to their Yelp reviews? 😉
