Watch the Promo for Certain Prey: Harmon in Action as Davenport

Mark Harmon as Lucas Davenport in USA’s Certain Prey/ Ben Mark Holzberg and USA Network
Here’s USA’s description of the movie Certain Prey, based upon John Sandfords novel, to air two weeks from now:

Lucas Davenport doesn’t need his job as Minneapolis’s Deputy Chief of Police; he could have retired long ago with the money he made designing computer simulations. But Davenport loves what he does just as much as he loves nice suits, fast cars, and women. When a cop is shot after witnessing the murder of the wife of a local real estate lawyer, Davenport is called to the scene. The cops quickly zero in on the husband as the prime suspect, until a team of FBI agents descends on Minneapolis with evidence linking the crime to elusive hit woman Clara Rinker (Tatiana Maslany). Taking charge of the investigation, Davenport suspects that Clara is not working alone and sets his sights on Carmel Loan (Lola Glaudini), a high-powered attorney with an intense obsession for the real estate lawyer. As Carmel and Clara try to cover up their crimes, the body count grows and Davenport does what he does best—break all of the rules to nab this deadly duo.

And here’s the promo:

When we first posted about this TV movie, there was a lot of talk in the comments about casting Harmon of NCIS, mostly pro, but some con.  We enjoyed Lola Glaudini on Criminal Minds, until she did bad things and had to leave the BAU (shame on you, Elle Greenaway). But the producers chose an interesting place to begin by starting in the 10th book of the series, so an older Davenport would make sense.  However, if they try to wedge in too much backstory of his wealth and sell the image of him as superficial in valuing fancy suits, cars, and women, that doesn’t square with the image a couple of us have in our heads of the intensely focused and physically tough cop who values most having the resources he needs at any time and for any task.  Also, we think of USA as doing sunnier crime shows (think Psych, Monk, White Collar, Burn Notice), but Sandford’s books are kind of dark, so we’re curious.

What do you think after seeing the trailer?

I’m willing to give it a try.

I can’t wait to see it!!!! I am addicted to the novels, so I obviously have my own idea of what would Lucas look like, but I can see Mark Harmon as the character. And I agree with the author of the article, this is a MUCH better match than Tom Cruse as Jack reacher (seriously, who came up with that disastrous idea????).

I’ll give it a shot. And I agree with Evelina about the whole Cruise/Reacher disaster. Those of us who still read the book before the movie have certain ideas of what our favorite characters look like. I can buy the Mark Harmon/Lucas Davenport thing. But Cruise as Reacher just doesn’t fly in my world.
