Okay, say that 3 times fast.
This is the first look at director Tomas Alfredson’s take on John LeCarre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. It stars Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, and also John Hurt, who I don’t see credited, but that’s him in this clip alright. Love the mournful string score, and it looks fabulous!
(At least, we’re all Smileys about it—do you agree?)
If the link goes wonky, you can also see it at the Guardian.
Isn’t this the music from Dracula by Wojciech Kilar? Or very, very, very similar
Your question provoked me, Mike, and I had to go do some research! Turns out, though this sounds close to Kilar’s work–which earwormed me in The Ninth Gate— it’s actually borrowed from the soundtrack to 2010’s The Wolfman (starring Anthony Hopkins and Benicio del Toro). And that/this score was actually composed by Danny Elfman.
Such atmospheric strings, and considering The Wolfman’s not using them for much at the moment, I’m glad to see them repurposed this way. Very fitting sound for a movie filmed largely in Hungary, but as currently Elfman isn’t credited (on imdb at least) at the T2S2 composer, we’ll all have to see what ends up accompanying the final cut!
